February 4th is the World Cancer Day. A day is observed to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, early detection, and treatment.World cancer Day gives us an ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds and in the world’s media. It gives us opportunity to clear up negative perceptions and misconceptions about this disease in minds of people. This is the occasion which compel us to retrospect, to study, to plan and to develop our strategies to address the cancer burden.

In order to check the spread of this huge epidemic, emphasis should be given to raise awareness about the disease among the general population, media and health professionals as well.

World cancer day campaign this year will explore how we can implement what we already know in the areas of prevention, early detection, treatment and care, and in turn, open up to the exciting prospect that we can impact the global cancer burden for the better.

Despite of constant efforts has been put in to achieve above mentioned goals, disparities between people from different settings are growing, particularly in access to prevention, treatment and palliative care especially in developing countries like India. For a developing country like India the fact is that, the economic cost of cancer treatment is unaffordable. Hence awareness should be raised about cancer prevention, adopting healthy lifestyles & behaviors and on early detection.

Let’s review how Ayurveda can help to achieve this goal of prevention and treatment care

1. Choosing healthy lifestyle-

The aim of the world cancer organization is to Reduce the social and environmental risk factors for cancer and empowering people to make healthy choices, in order to achieve the global overarching goal of reducing premature deaths from NCDs by 25% by 2025 and reaching the aspirational targets of the World Cancer Declaration.

At least one third of occurrence of most cancers can be prevented through adopting healthy life style, non smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, healthier diet and improved physical activity.
• Don’t smoke
• Be moderate in drinking alcohol
• Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains Avoid high-fat foods, especially from animal sources
• Do regular exercise

Besides above mentioned guidelines, adopting simple and effective prevention approach based on Ayurvedic principles of swasthvritta would definitely be top up on it. It can be summarized as follows-

Diet and digestion:

• Eat a Wholesome (satvik) diet that is rich in natural cancer-fighting chemicals

• Eat on regular intervals and when you feel hungry

• Add beneficial spices and food to your diet to fight cancer

• Avoid junk food, oily spicy food etc., that makes the body susceptible to cancer. Avoid the toxic load on your digestive system

• Keep digestion working properly to enhance immunity, build up beneficial chemicals, and reduce toxin accumulation.
• Reduce sugar intake

• One of major cause of cancer is disruption in immune surveillance mechanism. By adopting dinacharya and Ritu charya ( daily & seasonal regimes described in swastha vritta )and by adopting simple lifestyle changes such as regular abhyanga(oil massage), sleeping at the right time, reducing stress, emphasizing positive emotions etc., immune system can be revitalized

• Avoid smoking, alcohol, and environmental pollutants strictly. Due to the harmful effects of the various internal and external toxins we encounter every day, it is crucial that we detoxify our physiology.

• So Detoxify your system following procedures of pachakarma regularly (seasonal pachakarma)

• Add herbal formulations when necessary, to aid digestion, improve sleep, enhance immunity, etc.

• Meditation and yoga reduces stress levels and improve Function of enzymes responsible for living longer (telomerase). Meditation bring harmony and peace into your life and brings homeostasis.

• Be positive and kind to every one & in all circumstances which will make your surrounding positive. The condition in which people live and work influence their capacity to chose healthy lives

Thus by adoption of healthy behaviors (swasthya vritta) early in life, reduces the risk of cancer and other non communicable diseases (NCD).

Delivering early detection –

Emphasis should be given on early detection programs

Early detection strategies include strategies to improve knowledge of cancer among communities, health professionals and policy makers and increase awareness around the options for early detection.
By ensuring availability of and access to early detection program for cancer can significantly reduce the burden of cancer in many countries

Achieving Treatment For All –

All people have the right to access quality, effective cancer treatment and services without suffering economic hardship equal terms, regardless of geography.

To achieve this goal other systems of medicine should be evaluated on the basis of scientific criteria in accordance with conventional medicine and new compounds and drugs should be invented.

An integrated approach is needed to manage cancer using the growing knowledge gained through scientific developments.

Thousands of herbal and traditional compounds are being screened worldwide to validate their use as anti-cancer drugs. Indian medicinal plants which have curative aspects and re-described to have Rasayana properties can be effectively used in such conditions as they can have check on our immune surveillance system. Medicinal plants with Rasayana properties help in slowing down aging process and provides protection against diseases.

Rasayanas provide long life, ability to remain young and good intellect by enhancing proper uptake of nutrition by body cells thus imparting proper growth and improvement in seven vital tissues. This can be achieved by multifaceted actions of Rasayana drugs. With their antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic , immune modulator properties these medicinal plants can activate immune responsiveness of an individual ( organism).

Maximizing Quality Of Life
Cancer can have a serious impact on a person’s emotional, physical and mental state and cancer survivors are at risk of diminished quality of life for several years after diagnosis. Understanding this, the special support system should be built.
Efforts should be taken for maintaining QOL of cancer patients. Maintaining social support networks and talking about cancer is important for both the person living with cancer and their close relatives.

There is much that can be done at an individual, community and governmental level, to harness and mobilize these solutions and to bring in positive change.
Every Action Counts. Whether you do something on large scale or a small donation from you to a cancer institute or wearing a ribbon to spread the message or forwarding a text or a template or a quote on a social networking site
YES, EVERY ACTION COUNTS….
Every action has an impact; Show the world that fighting cancer is not beyond us …

Winter is still in full swing. It is the most pleasant time of the season.
According to Ayurveda the “Hemanta” (November – December :beginning of winter) and “Shishira”(January – February: late winter) seasons together, are referred to as the cold season (“sheeta kaala”).
Shishira marks the onset of aadaana kaala (the period of dehydration). According to Ayurveda physical strength and appetite is highest in winter.
In winters, the body retains heat and protects itself from the cold weather. This strengthens the digestive system and makes it capable of digesting large portions of food. Seasonal food available in this period is also rich and nutritious. This season is particularly good for enhancing immunity (ojus).
But with falling temperature dryness intensifies further. Occasional clouds, wind and rainfall are also features of late winter which we all witnessed for last couple of years.
Due to extreme cold in winter, vata dosha increases and kapha dosha gets accumulated naturally.
Though it is the joyful season many people seem to be down with cold, cough and sniffles and other vata related problems like exaggeration of skin conditions, joint pain, relatively high blood pressure.
So follow do’s don’t explained in ancient text of “Ayurved” and take care of yourself . You can avoid these irritating health problems just by following simple tips like –
1. Avoid cold food, cold water and cold drinks.
2. Avoid vata-increasing diet (bitter, astringent and pungent tastes)
3. Eat rich food, but don’t over eat
4. Foods which are unctuous, hot and sour – salty as the overwhelming taste can be taken in moderation this season as these tastes are vata pacifying.
5.Cereals and pulses, wheat/gram flour items, new rice, corn, and others, are suggested. Ginger, garlic, Haritaki (fruits of Terminalia chebula), pippali (products of Piper longum), sugarcane items, and milk and milk items are to be incorporated into the eating regimen.
6. Try to keep yourself warm by wearing warm clothes, warm baths and steams or by taking sun baths
7. Do vigorous physical activity or exercise. Aerobic exercises, yoga poses or cardio are recommended.
7. Harshness of winter damages your skin and intensifies ageing of the skin. Take care of your skin with regular abhyangam treatment (massage with vata pacifying medicinal oils, sesame oil or mustard oil ). It keeps your skin soft, smooth and supple.
8.Abhyangan also detoxifies your body, keeps it warm, and prevents aggravation of vatadosha.
9. Abhyangam also rejuvenates central nervous system, relieves stress, calms mind, and improves the quality of your sleep.
10. Abhyanga improve blood circulation and controls peripheral vessel constriction thus helps to regulate high Blood pressure in winter.
In case you’re already down with a cold and a cough you can use home remedies to treat it. Here’s how:
1. Take 1 tsp of tulsi juice and honey
2. Take warm water or ginger tea
3. Saute flaxseeds. Add water and boil it. Add 1 small piece of cinnamon, 1 clove, sounf (aniseeds) and small size onion. Boil until it remains 1/4 and then strain it. Add a few drops of lime juice and honey. Consume the mixture for cold and cough relief

4. Inhale fumes of ajwain (carom seeds) and haldi (turmeric)

Follow Ayurveda and stay healthy…

In today’s times, people have become more health conscious. The need for an integrated approach is felt intensively as we all are going through a tough time where in conventional system of medicine doesn’t seem a convincing role in disease prevention. This is where, Ayurveda, an ancient indigenous science of life, comes in life. Recently, we are seeing a rising interest in Ayurveda. This is because Ayurveda primarily aims at physical as well as mental well being as against Allopathy, which is mainly disease centric and focuses on super specialist practise thereby hardly contributing to prevention of disease.

Prevention is most important aspect of medicine which has been neglected for so many years but recently it has come to a fore front and is being taken in to account in management of health.

For example, as part of the 2020 impact goals, the American Heart Association (AHA) has set out seven ideal health goals – non smoking, maintaining normal weight, increased physical activity, a healthy diet, normal blood lipid levels, normal blood pressure and a normal fasting glucose. An analysis of the US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) showed, that individuals who met five of the seven ideal metrics of AHA, had a 78% reduction in the hazard ratio for all causes of mortality. These AHA’s Life’s Simple 7 metrics develop to measure and promote cardiovascular health and also predicts a lower risk of CKD.

Having a healthy lifestyle change just through healthy diet and exercise, metabolic diseases are reduced considerably. Traditional Medicine, which emphasizes these aspects in their practice plays a very important role. Therefore, the medical fraternity are now talking more about preventive guidelines and prevention of disease.

Fortunately we have inherited the legacy of ancient science of life, ‘’Ayurveda’’, based on a philosophy that good health comes from integrating all aspects of life such as lifestyle, food, conduct, exercise and lastly medicines.

Every human being is born with a unique constitution which are broadly divided into three specific prototypes, based on “Tridosha”. “Tridoshas” viz Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These Tridosha are three basic driving forces present within our bodies in a specific combination and perform their specific functions. This combination of doshas help define our physical, mental and emotional make-up that keeps our body in homeostasis and in turn maintains healthy body state.

Ayurvedic approach primarily emphasizes prevention and maintenance of health स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणम् आतुरस्य विकार प्रशमनम् च ||Next to prevention is treatment of disease.

In Swasthavritta, Ayurved advocates all the preventive principles which are necessary for maintaining health. Dinacharya, Ritucharya (the daily and seasonal regimens respectively) and Sadvritta are three essentials for healthy life in order to keep the Tridoshas in a state of healthy equlibrium and metabolism (agni) in proper order.

But these prevention strategies should be employed at the earliest stages of development so that these practices become a way of life. Rather it should be applied since the time of conception and during pregnancy to obtain healthy progeny. As per scientific data, 30% of the children born in India are of low birth weight. Chances of developing metabolic diseases is relatively high in these low birth weight children. But with adopting garbhdharan samskar and garbhini paricharya which mainly deals with maternal nutrition, help to improve nutritional status before conception and during pregnancy.

Even after taking proper care and despite adopting prevention strategies sometimes these three doshas go out of the balanced state, disease eventually occurs.

In Ayurveda, an holistic approach is taken for the prevention and treatment of disease. The human body is considered as one unit when it comes to a treatment part. The Ayuvedic Physician evaluates a patient’s health by determining his or her inherent constitution and imbalanced state of Doshas causing ailments. Treatment is based on administrating a combination of herbs and managing diet, panchkarma, lifestyle changes etc. to bring the doshas and body back into homeaostasis and to alleviate the disease.

Translated it means,
A person is healthy who’s body, mind and soul are in normal state and all physiological actions are proper and in sync unlike the person who is physically healthy but mentally and spiritually not in proper state.

Thus, Ayurveda Practitioners are rightfully forging ahead on the right path as shown by their Acharyas i.e. Teachers thus trying to achieve the state of overall well being and health of their patients.
